Deutschtown
The Priory
Former priory in Deutschtown, now a hotel
In 1848 German-speaking immigrants in Deutschtown, then a neighborhood of Allegheny City, founded St. Mary’s parish. The church was finished in 1854. The priory, the house next door where the priests lived, was built in 1888. The last Mass was said on 27 September 1981, and the parish closed after that. The church and the priory are the Priory Hotel now. The church is used for events.
Guests are told that a monk still walks the house. That is the story’s name for one of the men who lived in the priory. The hotel’s own history of the building does not tie him to a particular death.
