Former state hospital, South Fayette
Mayview State Hospital opened in 1893 as Marshalsea, a home for the poor, on the line between South Fayette and Upper St. Clair. By the 1930s it held thousands of patients and had become a psychiatric hospital, the last one the state ran in Allegheny County. The state announced the closing in 2007. The last patients sent there by the courts left for Torrance State Hospital in November 2008. Mayview itself closed on 31 December 2008. The property was sold in 2010. By the summer of 2012 the buildings along Mayview Road were coming down.
About thirty numbered graves, once part of the hospital, are kept behind a fence at Fairview Park in South Fayette. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette described the plot in 2014, in the same story as the cemetery at Dixmont. The wards are gone. The graves were kept.
